As a new graduate from a state uni in New York, I do agree with you for the most parts. I have reading many articles about this topic. And I would say that college is worth investing if your major require higher education like law, medicine, engineer, etc . Without the facility and instruction of professors, it is hardly work in those careers. Also, college is just about gaining knowledge, you will have to learn to balance your work, study, social life, you make new friends and relationships through networking events. You also participate in extracurricular activities, sport, clubs, seminar which further your chance to find yourself. College may not really work for some career like computer science, graphic designer, business, journalism because these things can be learned online and employer do not care about your degree that much. However, if you work for a company and want to climb to the higher position, often time, they do require you to have at least a bachelor or master degree. If you work for yourself, have your own business, feel free.
