Statistics showed that 70% of American people live pay check to pay check. What does this mean? 7 out of 10 people you meet fall into this category. We are living in a consumerism economy where advertisement exist everywhere namely TV, social media, internet and magazines. Their marketing strategy, in general, is “ you will feel validated after buying our product or service”. Not happy with your body image, buy our weight loss supplements. Want to impress your friends and everyone you meet on the street, buy our luxury car with high-tech audio system and luxury interior and exterior designs. Not confident with your fashion styles, buy our new trending clothes, you will look much better. The list keep going.

The problem is people buy so many things they don’t need just to impress others or to get a feeling of wholeness, which should come inside not outside.

I have to admit that before learning about financial management and financial independence, I was one of the victim of consumerism. I kept buying shoes and clothes to catch the trends. Finally, I threw away lots of them when I moved from New York to California. What a waste of money! The thing is I only got a sense of happiness really…
